The concept of assessment

“Assessment is about teachers and not about students.”

Morning meeting
The day started with all of us making funny faces. After the fun exercise, Ms. Chetna asked us who was the funniest. Students chose either themselves or someone they could observe. They had to give reasons for their choice. She inquired what were we actually doing while trying to choose the funniest. Students came up with responses like observing, thinking, judging, trying to understand.

Assessment
Ms. Chetna shared a video, we watched a part of it and could connect that while trying to choose the funniest, we were assessing. Next to this, we worked in breakout rooms to discuss the prompt questions shared by Ms. Chetna. Each group had to discuss one question and share their thoughts after coming back to the main session.

  • What is assessment?
  • When is it done?
  • Where is it done?
  • How can it be done?
  • Who all are involved in the process of assessment?
  • Why do we need assessment?

Ms. Chetna hopped into all the rooms to facilitate the discussions. Students shared relevant points after coming back to the main session which helped us understand the concept better. Ms.Chetna shared the rest of the video where we understood other details about the assessment. She will share examples of some tools of assessment tomorrow.

Number patterns
We saw two images on the shared screen. We had to observe the images and share our thoughts. Students could easily identify, they expressed skip counting A- forward by 10 and B- backward by 5. Ms. Chetna encouraged us to choose any one of the patterns and create our own beginning from any number of their choice. As she wasn't able to check everyone's patterns, she suggested taking a picture and posting it in Seesaw in the Photos folder.
She shared a few more number patterns for us to observe. Now the question was how can we explain the pattern. Students were a little confused so she an example where we explain the pattern using base ten blocks. It was easy to understand. Ms. Chetna has assigned a Seesaw task related to the same.

 Comparing numbers
To recap the number we played an online quiz. It was fun. Some of us were facing internet issues hence couldn't;t complete the quiz.

Research continues
Students have begun to think about the people who inspire them. Some of us have added responses to the Padlet. Ms. Chetna encouraged us to continue the research.

“To assess the quality of thoughts of people, don't listen to their words, but watch their actions.”
